Overseas Chinese: PNG and Pacific - Part 1

PAPUA New Guinean’s call them “Kong Kong’s”. Unfortunately, they do not understand that these “Kong Kong” brothers and sisters are not only from China but other Asian countries.

They came in different waves before 1975 for various reasons. But recently, there has been anti-Chinese momentum in PNG.

This commentary would like to provide basic facts about the Chinese or Asian’s in PNG in a series.

This will drive some sense and understanding into the minds of Papua New Guineans.

Tetsu Ichikawa, a research fellow at Tokyo University partly contributes. He studies the Chinese migrants in Papua New Guinea, especially those who have arrived since 1975.

The series of articles will give some insight as to how the Chinese came to PNG and Solomon Islands, when did they arrive, what have they done so far, where are they now and what are they doing today.

Most importantly is the new group of Chinese entering PNG and Pacific.

Many publications have discussed appropriate terms for addressing Chinese overseas. These include hua-qiao (overseas Chinese), huaren (ethnic Chinese), huayi (Chinese descendants), huashang (Chinese merchants), huagong (coolies), huazu (Chinese people), huamin (Chinese folks) and so on.

In particular, huaqiao and huaren are often used to describe the degree of localization of Chinese people outside China.

Huaqiao literally means Chinese (hua) sojourners (qiao). Usually this term is used to denote Chinese who hold Chinese citizenship while living abroad.

On the other hand, huaren means Chinese (hua) people (ren), and indicates Chinese who have acquired local citizenship and do not intend to return to China.

Many Chinese people, especially those in Southeast Asia, tend to avoid calling themselves huaqiao. Because the word qiao connotes temporary residence, calling themselves huaqiao would arouse the suspicion by others that they do not consider the host country as their own, and as such are still attached to China.

Therefore, most of the locally born generations who do not intend to return to China prefer to call themselves huaren because huaren is more neutral in the political sense than huaqiao.

This preference reflects a change in the status of the ethnic Chinese from sojourners to settlers.

Scholar Wang Ling-chi (1998) proposes two Chinese phrases to describe the changing nature of Chinese migrants from sojourners to settlers: from “luoye guigen” to “luodi shenggen”.

Literally “luoye guigen” means “falling leaves returning to their roots” and refers to Chinese immigrants abroad returning to China after making enough money.

On the other hand, “loudi shenggen” means putting down roots in the soil of countries other than China, or Chinese immigrants and their descendants looking upon their host country as a place of permanent residence, without thinking of repatriating to China.

This framework is based on a presupposition that the Chinese people outside China will localize gradually.

Used in a neutral sense, it can avoid the premise that Chinese society outside China is the same as the one in mainland China.

Rather, it suggests that ethnic Chinese societies can be understood in the context of the host countries.

Therefore, this framework is adopted by many scholars to avoid seeing ethnic Chinese societies abroad as extensions of mainland China, and instead to recognize the diversity within ethnic Chinese in the world.

However, there are other patterns of Chinese migration and settlement besides the “from sojourners to settlers” one. Some Chinese migrants are born outside China and migrate to other countries.

These Chinese do not follow the “from sojourners to settlers” pattern because their transnational activities and social spaces are not confined to their places of birth.

There is another type of Chinese who are born in mainland China, leave for a foreign country, and re-migrate to other countries. Such successive and frequent mobility illustrates some contemporary features of the international movement of the Chinese.

It has been noticed that Chinese society outside China becomes localized gradually, at the same time that the Chinese are migrating internationally.

Wang Gungwu has examined Chinese international migration from the 18th to 20th centuries and suggests four migration patterns.

First, there is the huashang (traders) pattern, referring to merchants and artisans. This was the dominant pattern from early times in various parts of Southeast Asia.

It was first established within China, extended abroad, and became dominant from the 18th century to the 1850s.

The second is the huagong (coolies) pattern which was not significant until the 1850s. The migrants of this pattern consisted of normally men of peasant origin, landless laborers, and the urban poor.

This pattern of migration gained tremendous impetus from the gold rush in North America and Australia; it was also significant, without the gold rush, in Southeast Asia.

The third one is the huaqiao (sojourners) pattern which included not only huashang and huagong but also teachers, journalists and other professionals who went abroad.

This pattern developed at the end of the 19th century and was dominant up to the 1950s.

It is not marked by the occupational character of the migrants but is indicative of the political, legal and ideological level of nationalist development in mainland China.

The fourth one is the huayi (descendants of re-migration) pattern. This is a relatively new phenomenon and includes foreign nationals of Chinese descent.

Those who are categorized in this pattern are born and naturalized in foreign countries. Often they re-migrate to another foreign country.

There are several reasons for the migration of ethnic Chinese. Chinese immigrants who have become localized in host societies and re-migrated after generations do so for different reasons arising from different situations in different host societies.

Sojourning is qiaoju in Chinese and the term usually means temporary residence in a foreign country, usually referring to longer visits and extended periods of stay which sometime lead to the decision not to return home, but to be naturalized in the country of residence.

In this situation Chinese migrants do not necessarily make a conscious decision on whether to settle down in the host country or return to their homeland.

Sojourning is a prelude to eventual migration. Investigating the concept of sojourning provides us with a useful premise in studying the history of Chinese migration in Southeast Asia before the 1940s and global migration today, because it is important to look into an ambiguous status of Chinese migrants, instead of assuming that they are either moving or settling.

Researching on the Chinese immigration in and emigration from PNG will enable us to understand the nature of Chinese migration and settlement.

Some scholars researching on ethnic Chinese society in PNG have pointed out its sojourning and diasporic character.

David Wu who has studied the PNG Chinese community before independence reports that the Chinese in PNG had not assimilated into native New Guinean society but maintained their Chinese identity despite having resided there for generations.

He observes that in spite of acculturation and intermarriage with the local people, the Chinese in PNG did not loose their ethnic identity.

He also notices their emigration to Australia: “In short, the Chinese of PNG have remained sojourners - or eternal diaspora - despite 100 years of presence”.

Although his main concern is with the Chinese old comers who have resided in New Guinea since the colonial period, his view throws light on the peculiarity of the Chinese new comers in contemporary PNG.

Christine Inglis who also researches on the PNG Chinese takes note of both the locally born Chinese and the new arrivals.

She advocates the need to re-examine the nature of Chinese identities, and suggests that the Chinese population of PNG is transforming from settlers to sojourners.

We first look at the early Chinese migrants to PNG. The early history of the Chinese migrants in the South Pacific is not well known.

Chinese pioneers in this part of the world could be engaged in the trading of sandalwood and collection of marine products; they were primarily traders.

But they tended not to settle in the South Pacific. The beginning of Chinese settlement in the South Pacific coincided with the Western colonization of the area when Chinese were engaged in various occupations such as plantation workers, traders and artisans.

The Chinese migrants in New Guinea also started in the colonial era.

Before the Europeans colonized New Guinea, Chinese traders might have visited New Guinea Island and hunted birds of paradise for their trade.

But these early Chinese arrivals did not stay for long and did not establish permanent settlement.

Like in the other countries in Oceania, Chinese settlement in New Guinea started during the colonial period.

After Germany colonized the northeastern part of New Guinea Island in 1884, it entrusted Neuguinea Kompagnie with the administration and economic development of the New Guinea area.

The company started plantations for tobacco and copra in mainland New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago by recruiting Chinese laborers.

Those Chinese who came during this period were indentured laborers mostly from Singapore and Sumatra . Working conditions on the plantations were harsh.

In 1895, 28 percent of those laborers died and were buried in Mainland New Guinea. After the indentured period, most of the laborers left New Guinea Island to return home.

Beginning in 1898 when the German colonial government took over the administration from Neuguinea Kompagnie, Chinese free immigration, instead of indentured labor, was promoted.

Chinese workers were engaged as carpenters, ship builders, engineers, tailors, shopkeepers and managers of plantations.

Some of them began to settle and establish communities in towns, such as Rabaul, Kokopo,
Kavieng, Lae and Madang.

Rabaul, which became the capital of German New Guinea in 1910, received an especially large number of Chinese settlers.

The number of Chinese in the New Guinea area in 1890 was estimated at around 200, and the Chinese population grew to 1,427 in 1913.

In Rabaul and Lae, where the residence of Chinese was restricted to certain areas, Chinese immigrants established Chinatowns.

During this period, Chinese immigrated not only from Singapore and Sumatra, but also from
Hong Kong and mainland China.

These Chinese came from particular areas in Guangdong province, such as Siyi and Huiyang . Siyi literally means four counties.

The Siyi area consists of the four counties of Kaiping , Taishan, Enping and Xinhui. These counties have sent Chinese emigrants to various foreign countries since the 19th century.

Besides these Cantonese, there are some Hakka people in the Chinese community of PNG, most of them mainly from the Huiyang area in Guangdong. They used to speak Cantonese or Hakka as their common languages.

This period of German New Guinea colonization was the time when the Chinese community changed its character from a society of temporary immigrants to one of permanent residents.

In 1914, when World War I began, Australia acquired the New Guinea region after a battle with Germany.

Beginning in 1920, New Guinea fell under the control of Australia as a Mandated Territory of the League of Nations.

Australia adopted the “White Australian Policy” and restricted Chinese immigration into
New Guinea.

New immigrants had to take a dictation test conducted in European languages which was actually impossible for Asians to pass.

Those Chinese who stayed in New Guinea, therefore, could not easily invite their relatives in China to join them freely.

All Chinese who had settled in New Guinea before 1922 were acknowledged as permanent alien residents, and those who came after that date were considered temporary residents and were allowed to stay only for certain periods.

Travel within the New Guinea area and abroad to the Papuan area was restricted. As a result, Chinese communities developed only in the New Guinea area, and not in the Papuan area.

Even though Chinese immigration was restricted in New Guinea under Australian control, the Chinese kept contact with relatives in their home villages in China.

Most of the early Chinese immigrants were unmarried men, and some of them married local women. The children of mixed blood Chinese were brought up in the Chinese community and educated as Chinese.

Later on the Chinese in New Guinea tried to bring their relatives from China who were allowed to enter New Guinea temporarily.

Before the Pacific War began, the Chinese population in New Guinea was over 2,000.

Business with the Australians in this area was mainly conducted by Chinese tailors and owners of a variety of trade stores.

Hi folks.

As you know, there is anti-Chinese campaign going on in PNG.. This has happened in Solomon Island with a devastating riot in Honiara in 2006. Fiji, today given its political situation is establishing good relationship with China, finally for a change.

What i am so concerned is that our papua New Guineans do not see the wave of Chinese or people of Asian origins coming to PNG and the Pacific. I thing that though we are living in PNG, we do do not even know the reasons and wave of Asians and Chinese in our country.

Therefore, I am attaching an article done by a Japanese scholar for you to read and understand. I have obtained written permission from the scholar and will run series of commentaries in my weekly column with Sunday Chronicle starting this Sunday.

Patriots, we live in China and we know Chinese people and the government better then those who are putting up hatred feelings against our brothers and sister from China and other Asian countries.

If you can join me, we can tell the people how genuine China is today. Chinese people love their country and we also love our country, but yet we are human being. I am sure we can learn a lot from China. I join China in all her regional and international engagements. I have followed China very closely and if you have time to reason her diplomacy, you will be suprised. USA now sees China as a friend. China represents the developing countries in regional and international forums. But I am so sad when we in PNG try to hate China. I want to help our people to understand China. Please join me!

Finally, my blog or website has been blocked so you can not access it now.

Thanks

Thank you Mathew for sharing this. We are all terribly saddened by the unfolding of the recent events back at home. I do not condone the actions of the looters but their actions was a build up of frustrations build over time. Failure in institutional regulatory system have pushed Papua New Guineans to the periphery of their market and bring the more competitive players the Asians to the core. Frustrations of such system was the main cause of the current looting going on.
Anyway something needs to be done about it and we must act now.
I am sorry to hear that your blog was blocked. Don't tell me it is because of the recent attach of the Asians back at home.

Hi folks,

Mathew said well. It all came from stupid ignorant personnels who work for back door deal, pay me first and process passport employees, lunch money, cheating, corrupt personnel ,did you read the view point TheNational about a PNG wanting to bring his friend over to Canberra and PNG high commion asked for money of K1000? These are people who have contributed to corruption and run down of what now has become.

Asians are merchants-traders,if you ask them to pay you as a bribe even to give them right to trade-they will do so. To them is still part of trade, unfortunately who ever down there in POM office or abroad has terribly failed his or her oath to PNG and most importantly God.

Asians or PNG national are not at fault, ask the foreign affiars and immigration office. They will have to screen all the people and cross check who is illigal and who is not.

No westerner can go into the Bush of Porgera or cowboy town -one side town of Kainantu and trade. With 97% of all goods and servces owned and run by Asians, if they stop for a brief moment - i guess our target and pulpuls are still there.

What have we done for the past 40 years? Engineering buai and exporting as main cash crop? Most of the people who suppose to do the right thing and trade like our Asians friends are lazy and sitting arround doing nothing all do,playing cards selling and trading buais. Is that what you guys call industriliazation? Yet we have to pay more tax for producing green house gases..hehehehe! Funny ah?

China will rise to its highest peak,USA is budgetting on dinau moni form China and world over,China has emerge as mighty and powerful-but humble, recently she has given financial aid to certain Arabian countries,it is underway to make yuan alternative cash beside US dollar. Yet PNG national are ill educated of the dynmics of Asian rise.

The anti asian campaign in PNG is government mess, while the word government is too broad but individual who wickedly fail their oaths in the face of money have brought all these.

May God Almighty decide their fate on the great day of Judgement .

Hi elites,

Thanks for the commands and expression of our beloved asians facing with our beloved country men and women.

I feel the same as our two brothers has expressed as any fellow country men and women living and studying here in China. However, economic ties and diplomacy between PNG and China has no play in current situation there in PNG. China is named as developing country but I see has the Power House of Asia. Asians facing whatever lose has nothing to do with Chinese Government and is nothing to do with our scholarship and studies here in China. We have been sponsored by the Chinese Government and not Asians with small trade stores all over PNG. The ties is between the two governments and not with anybody on the street.. Lets get things straight here.

The cause of this late issue is with our government. Which everytime we have been talking about all the negativities with our leaders and higher office bearers.. Soon or later Asians or foreigners will flood into PNG, you know why? PNG is full of green grass. Then our saying, 'Rich in resource but yet poor' will move down step by step. I think the move by our people is a eye opener for the government to look into this matter.

I am not ANTI-ASIANs but I'm talking the real facts and figures as a close friend of Giant China.

Over to You!!!!!!!!!!!

Brothers I have argued all day today about what is going on back at home. I am in a group of email forum of Papua New Guinean elites from all spectrum of societies in PNG. I single handedly debate for China and have prove that most of them lack the substance of their argument. They've just fallen victim of western speculations about China. No wories, from this looting I believe something good is going to come out....Before the good comes out the bad must go...This looting is for a good course. Sadly most of our elites back at home are still living under the sting of Western Influence and these days are coming to an end.
I posted two very controversal article to postcourier today as a result of the ongoing debate I had with those back at home and througout the world. Hope it is published tomorow. They did not even published two of my previous article. This is the first and last and will never write to them again....Let the media take their sides...I am going to publish in international journals and newspapers soon.

Tonny,

Thanks for your email. You have said well....we have imported second hand cloth from Asutralia and NZ. Ever since, we have never protested against that. you and I live in China and wear, eat and do all things with China s facilities. Mind you, the first shoe I bought since I came here is still on my foot.

Regarding your mentioning that we have two sides to a coin, yes, I do agree. You are subject to all your opinion, so as brother Albert and others. But as students in China, I want us to minimise bad things and capatalise on good thing and how we can benefit from those. WE MUST!

Yes, read all your emails about the current issue back home....thanks alot. Excellent points have been raised by you twos.

Equip with the information from your previous emails and the recent newspaper articles,

Tupla question tasol …..i stap long het blo mi

(i) How can everyone back home (includ. looters/opportunists) be convinced that all the Asian friends are genuine business people in PNG? Looters/opportunists with their limited knowledge to the outside world and their judgments/actions are based on day to day experiences for survival and access to cheap basic services and goods.

(ii) Imagine/what if Aussies and N Zealanders (PNG main 2nd hand clothing suppliers), decided to come to PNG and set up 2nd clothing businesses by themselves thru trade store, market places, supermarket, etc and compete with our local 2nd clothing dealers.

Will everyone back home (includ. looters/opportunists) react the same way as the recent lootings and riots to the Aussies and N Zealanders?

Maybe the root cause is the system failure in the regulatory bodies to implement or monitor a wide range of issues that led to recent events back home.

Off course, we/our family are/were victims of various cheap and non genuine products back home in one time or another. I guess studying in China helps us to really understand some of the contributing factors of such issues arising at home. Lets not forget, its two side of the coin when its comes to such issues.

Gutpla apinun na harim gen long yupla.

Dear All,

Corruption is taking its toll in PNG. You walk on the streets people are selling and buying stollen items before your eyes and it is becoming a norm. You walk into shops people are asking you to pay less for what you get and give them some money for doing you the favor or they ask you to give them money so they can load more items then what you actually buy. PNG Laws are becoming useless because there is lack of enforcement. More and more crimes are seen and reported in the media. In the midst of all this situations God is on the Throne and is watching. Everything happens for a purpose. We can complain as we like but the devil still rules. However, satan is powerless and his evil ways have been defeated on the cross of calvary so lets all believe in God that he will give us the wisdom to deal with the corrupted actions. Asians can come and go but the root of all evil has to be dealt with. Lets fight the spiritual warfare on the demons that are at work in our beautiful paradise PNG. This country is blessed and the enemy is at work to bring destruction to spoil our good name. Christians lets bow our knees and pray for God to bring us that peace we are all searching for. May your hearts be bleesed. God Bless Papua New Guinea.

Hi Rose.

I am living in China now and know very well chinese attitude in business. let me ask you. What do you mean Asians can come and go? I would love if you can see what the Western powers did to PNG before the WWII and after and during colonisation. They have done nothing. What they left behind were all run down buildings and government mechanism. Rose, I do share your concern and opinion on corruption. Dear. its the role of the government. The government must look after the people to> convince them to serve the nation with honesty and dedication. If public> servants are paid K300 per fortnight then its not a lot of money, so they> resort to corruption. I believe that the middle class must be taken care of by the government. I have my reasons for that. Thanks

As you all know, there is anti-China campaign going on. Do you hate Chinese? I live, eat and do anything with Chinese here. They give me the best food, the best bed and look after me very well. If you take a time then you will understand them very well.

Their history is very long. China went through situations where she was abused by Western powers. Now, China wants to show that she can prove to them otherwise. If we work with China, I am sure we can learn a lot from their experience and intentions.

To those who are doing it, woe to you, Satan has no free gifts at the end of the day you will pay back with your own internal soul.

Frankly speaking, these types of incidences and abuses will continue on for an undefinite period of time unless this current generation is wiped out. People continue to suffer from bad decisions and ignorance of the government from year after year. The government is not analysing the bad side of the Chinese people coming to PNG to do business and is pursuing its own interests.

For instance, why are the locals being deprived of labour jobs? All the jobs that the locals should do are occupied by the Chinesse. Those locals working in Chinesse businesses are like slaves on our own land. They are paid the lowest after doing all the dirty work. The Chinese are hard working but for their own gain and are exploitive in a sense that they do not care abosut our health, environment, children, land, and the future. They always want to use our uneducated locals as working tools for their business success. The profit they make in PNG is deposited back into their own country and is not benefiting the country.

I am not bias in my analysis but am very concerned and so sad that over people are treated as primitives and stupid as not having any value in the society. The government is the one to blame for not communicating well with investors and the local people to avoid such problems. I think this is a very sensitive issue. Say for instance, assume that 75% of our youths are employed and there's no one sitting idle or roaming the streets. In this case, such problems would never happen. Who would bother to interfer with other peoples' business?

The government need to gurantee the 10 and 12 droupouts some sort of jobs. The point here is that the people are running out of patient....they are saying that they have being deprieved and suffered enough for years and want government to take some drastic actions. While in the towns, they find opportunites to keep them going and stealing and looting is one option for them if they find ways to do so.

It not that this idea is good but our people were not trained well to become self reliant and support thmeselves. The attitudes of every Papua New Guinea student is that they want paid employment when they complete some sort of education. No one is willing to go back and till the soil and start a trade store/business to support his or her life at home. These mentality is increasing at a very rapid rate and as number of droupouts and youths are increasing. I beleive this is the beginning of the problem and the government is going to face the consequences of its ignorance and big man mentality.

People are continously migrating to the urban areas in search for better government services like health, education, clothing, business, sports, food and so forh. The young people do not want to live in the rural villages anymore because their lives are already influenced by the western culture and foremost there is no service and development in the villages.

Patriots, you're in a far away land and do not know whats happening in the country. Honestly speaking, povery is raving in the villages of PNG, people are suffering from basic services, education, good roads and so on.................... who do one expect to live in these places. The number of school leavers is accelerating and no leader is interested in addressing these problems. Leaders are enjoying life and talking about major development of resources and and benefits while people a sufferring on the other hand.

Please I beg you all not to feel ashame of what our people have done..we are all product of all these primitive ways. Things HAPPEN for reasons which our government has to address it immediately......this is the reality in PNG. The looting of Chinese busines houses in Moresby happened last week Tuesday and in Lae on Wednesday, just recently over the weekends in Goroka and Madang. This event is a planned and well communicated through the help of modern communication systems.

Hi guys...

Its out of hand now..I would prefer Foreign affairs and immigrations..IPA..business operation control bodies to answer the people not the Asians. Very soon the world will relay on China for power, finance ,etc..global power shift has down played over night.

If all chinese or Asians leave the country, there will be internal economic decay, shortage of goods and services and unequal and low supply throughout the nation.
Many african nations faced the same problem by expelling chinese and indian traders. It was total choas. The big man politics in Africa has lead to high profile corruoption and PNG is likewise same.

Ready for radical changes to come forth very soon. Meanwhile, China has the 1/4 of all the riches here, lend money to most of the countries including USA and currently in progress to make the Chinese yuan alternative currency besudes USA dolllar.

Think twice b4 playing with a giant. The current riot and looting in PNG is all over in news in China.

Folks,

I do empathize with all you out there (Off shore). I can imagine the type of look you are receiving from other nationals. They look at you and think that you originated from primitive society.... some may be even making demoralizing comments on you face. And as a patriot you taking them all in ............yarae.

But whatever it is you are seeing/hearing out the is a symptom of a systematic democratic failure arraying from the bureaucratic pinnacles. This is a revelation of a wickedly challenged generation of leaders and followers alike out here. Every single action of a so-called leader is selfishly motivated 99% of the time. As we speak, the MP's are currently seeking immunity from the law of this beautiful nation.

What we lack here in PNG right now is intrinsically motivated individuals with a undying courage and determination to drive the multi-dimensional changes that we need to see for the betterment of this nation. Mahatma Gandhi after understudying the negativity in India addressed a group of aspiring graduates saying " You must be the Change you wish to see". What this country needs is a cluster of like-minded courageous leaders (be it current or emerging leaders) to be change agents by ourselves becoming the changes we wish to see.

So my message to yous who are off shore is that these negative stories are an indication that this young nation needs your learning and experiences to collectively re-design its destiny. Maybe these riots are calling for your wisdoms. If we truly believe in change than we will certainly achieve it no matter how long it takes (definitely not through this current generation of political and bureaucratic leadership). Hence don't be like Jonah in the Old Testament.

On the other end, if all these chaos is a fulfillment of the prophetic descriptions of the 'end of times' as in the Bible then so be it. We should rather pray that the Good Lord have mercy on us on the final Judgment Day, which may be sooner that we thought.

My apologies for taking up your time and also filling up your inbox.

Hi thanks brothers for the comments,

Its really shameful to hear our country mates are acting fools. I see the point brother Stones has mentioned, the only problem we, PNGans, have is we are far lazier than Chinese people. Chinese people are really hard working. We can chase the Chinese vendors and entrepreneurs out of PNG but who will take up the void? Those people who are looting are those penniless idiots on the streets. Are they going to do the businesses like the Chinese people doing to help those PNGans who live by the day making end meet? They don’t know what they are doing but just take advantage of the protest march lately.
However, on the other hand I agree the idea of restricting the Asians manipulating the small businesses which our local people are capable of. But it boils down to the point Tobby has mentioned about bad government policies. It’s very true. Government should set a policy which would allow potential FDI investors in our country to invest with at least a minimum amount of money, for instances, more than a million Kina and not like those Asians coming in with K1000 kina and expanding their business from PNG. Am saying this is because they come in with a less amount but when they make enough profits, their remittances rate is very high. The money is not circulating within our economy but its getting out of the country straight away. That is the leakage of the money out of the Domestic Currency Circular Flow, which has adverse effect on the Domestic Economy in terms of unemployment, etc. To make it worse, they don’t invest or deposit in our banks and later send to their country but they keep hard cash and send directly through their own urgent in RH at Gordon.

It is government’s one of the failures in the country that it doesn’t see carefully these kind of policies and has caused this problem. I don’t want to describe this current government…..

Good night brothers!

Hi,

everyone what our people have done back home. Rioting and looting
and killing of one Chinese national in PNG have attracted intentional bad image
to our country. the incident is and has been reported all throughout China.

where are we heading? I still believe and prove that Chinese Nationals are hardworking but
involve petty dishonesty in their gain. This seems to be their nature, but after all they are much more hardwroking.
No comparision but, we could learn learn from others.

When chinese friends told me that from your country I heard the news. It is very humiliaty and disgusting.

Albert and Stones,

Really and truely blame on government-state failure bringing both parties who are innocent to collision. The regulatory bodies-PNG man and woman who are employed to do their duties have failed the people and state moreover-God. Traipela sem true yah. Money faced-coined employees are unfaithful servants of this nation that lead us to such national up rising. Read about what happens in Zimbabwe and other countries when people tried to take over such -with government failure-there is total national economy, all the necessarry things channelled to your tables..possion will be affected. Surely this is a serious problem. A very bad name is paited on PNG people where ever in Asia.

When has a foreigner told one to produce quality product?-the fact is we remain consumer and client to others forever, I see asians as investigative, manufacturing etc..and not long all cheap goods and services will catch up in quality. There are already regulations and bodies to monitor and control.
When has PNG indulge in cloth making-textile,machineries,food,etc..processing and manufacturing? These are the questions to answer -which the government failed to involve people to creativity. The result people engage in others example -betel nut, gambling, etc...

We could even become the first nation to manufacture betel nut and export which government failed! heheheh.

We are stuck!

Bro,

I sympathize with both the PNG people and the Foreign nationals. Both sides are innocent. PNG people did what is right with their limited literacy,Asians did what was offered to them. The looting as reported is the manifestation of institutional failure and total government lack to control. The word control is the power word. Government loose control-We loose.
It is the responsibility of the Government to fix the problem. At this time when power shift is coming to Asia bloc,it is mandatory to fix the social uprising-Government responsibility. No time to waste.

Thank you.

Hosea,

I am also very much ashamed of what happened. Sorry for the innocent enterprenuers who became victims of our institutional regulatory failures. These only reflect bad government policies and administrative failures over a long period of time.

The people either for need or greed or just ceasing opportunity acted like animals and that is a big shame.
We the PNG students here in China are vested today with this challenge of changing western perspective on the Chinese back at home.
This event really reveal that PNGns are discriminators. We regarding Western Goods and Business to be better quality standards than the Chinese. This I guess all of you can prove it wrong in your short experience here in China.

Honest Mi sem pinis ya

People, I know you all have your own opinions regarding this message but I want to urge you all to do the right thing, and that is to ignore the hysteria and mob mentality that these types of messages engender.

Asians aren’t the cause of our woes. We (as a nation) have ourselves to blame for that.

I want to go on the record as saying I don’t support the idea behind this message in any way shape or form. I think it’s a cop out.

Dear very concerned Papua new Guineans,

This is too late, keep yourself away from this issue and talk to God to bless our country to be in a safe place so we may prosper one day when Jesus comes down to finish this sinfull earth.

May God richly bless you.

Thought I’d put in my two cents worth…..

Let’s focus on the real problem here, which are illegal Chinese/Asian immigrants…..while they should go back, why not go on to penalize the people who let it all happen in the first place…..corrupt and lazy customs and immigration officers who just don’t do their jobs? If these people are still holding on to their jobs, I don’t think the problem will disappear. And we would be just wasting our time…if we are to deal with this problem then let’s do it right and deal with everyone (from illegal Asians to corrupt government officials)…don’t leave any stone unturned.

But let’s go about this right….there are a lot of Papua New Guineans who will take this as an opportunity just to loot shops and attack any Asians in sight just to get a free bag of rice without caring what the whole campaign is about. That was quite evident in how the recent protests turned out with people shot at by the police. That is due to the NGOs and individuals involved not educating and carrying out proper awareness to our mostly illiterate public. And trust me, we don’t want another Solomon Islands…..we don’t want unnecessary bloodshed on our land….we have got other bigger issues to worry about than getting shot at by our own army or police.

What amazes me is that everyone is so passionate and willing to fight and get shot at over illegal Asians MEANWHILE EVERYDAY OUR DAUGHTERS, SISTERS MOTHERS GET THEIR BAGS PULLED AT THE BUSTOP (NO-ONE BOTHERS TO LIFT A FINGER TO HELP THEM); DOMESTIC/SEXUAL ABUSE IS ON THE INCREASE WITH MORE OF OUR INNOCENT CHILDREN FALLING VICTIMS TO THESE HORRIBLE & UNTHINKABLE CRIMES; CORRUPTION IS FOREVER ON THE INCREASE FROM THE TOP GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO GRASSROOTS LEVEL; I CAN’T EVEN AFFORD THE EVER INCREASING TAXES YET OUR MOST BASIC NEEDS FOR GOODS AND SERVICES ARE NOT CATERED FOR….AIDS (& EVEN SWINE FLU) CAN WIPE OUT THE WHOLE OF PNG FASTER THAN THE ILLEGAL ASIAN IMMIGRANTS TAKING OVER OUR COUNTRY. LACK OF PROPER HEALTH, SANITATION, HOUSING, EDUCATION, INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES ETC… IS AN EVERYDAY CONCERN AND ONE THAT IS WORTH ALL MY TIME, EFFORT AND ENERGY TO FIGHT FOR.?

ILLEGAL ASIANS ARE NOT KILLING, RAPING, STEALING FROM YOU & ME EVERYDAY…….WE ARE DOING IT TO OURSELVES….so if you ask me, I’d rather address the problems that affect the wellbeing and safety of my family and I everyday…. I believe that takes precedence over fighting illegal Asian owned tucker shops.

PNG LET’S GET OUR PRIORITIES RIGHT AND FIGHT FOR THEM!

Thanks

Hi all

Great ideas, so as professionals what do you think of doing. The Solomon Islands have done it, they have fought with their governments and the Asians to get rid of them from there island. The only way to do this is by protest, therefore do awareness at your work place, home, streets and support the NGO in anyway you could to push their intension to fight for the good course.

Thanks everyone for you great thoughts.

Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at here. There is such a nicey, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For several years , I earn money with the help of these programs.
I don't have problems with money now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I make 2G daily, and I started with funny 500 bucks.
Right now, I'm very close at catching at last a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Visit my blog to get additional info.

If I were to wager a guess at why, I’d say that users don’t “browse” forms. The interaction style users engage in with forms is different, and requires its own study and design best practices. This is a very interesting post, and the comments are also fantastic to read. I’ll have poses to have a little re-think about my own contact form on our new website, as this some interesting questions!
